Another Motorcycle Racer Gone to Soon

While in Italy for a May 17th Superbike championship race, Nicky Hayden 35, was involved in a bicycle/car accident that left him severely injured and in ICU suffering from "serious cerebral damage."  With his family at his side he passed away five days later in the intensive care unit at Cesena's Maurizio Bufalini Hospital.   The hospital has released a statement concerning Hayden's death. The statement reads: "The medical college has confirmed the death of the patient Nicholas Patrick Hayden, recovering from Wednesday May 17 in a hospital intensive care unit of Cesena Bufalini as a result of serious multiple injuries occurred on that date."

Hayden was in his 13th season, riding for the Red Bull Honda Team as number 69.  He won the MotoGP championship in 2006.

"It is with great sadness that Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team has to announce that Nicky Hayden has succumbed to injuries suffered during an incident while riding his bicycle last Wednesday.Nicky passed away at 19:09 CEST this evening at Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, Italy.  His fiancé Jackie, mother Rose and brother Tommy were at his side.  Throughout his career Nick's professionalism and fighting spirit was greatly valued and carried him to numerous successes, including his childhood dream of being crowned MotoGP World Champion with Honda in 2006. As well as being a true champion on the track, Nicky was a fan favorite off it due to his kind nature, relaxed demeanor, and the huge smile he invariably carried everywhere.  Nothing says more about Nicky's character than the overwhelming response expressed by fellow racers and his legions of fans over the past few days. Jackie and his family are truly grateful for the countless prayers and well wishes for Nicky.  The Kentucky Kid will be sorely missed by all that ever had the pleasure of meeting him or the privilege to see him race a motorcycle around a track, be it dirt or asphalt. The racing world says goodbye to one of its dearest sons. Rest in peace Nicholas Nicky Patrick Hayden.

Statement from Tommy Hayden

On behalf of the whole Hayden family and Nicky's fiancé Jackie I would like to thank everyone for their messages of support “ it has been a great comfort to us all knowing that Nicky has touched so many people's lives in such a positive way. Although this is obviously a sad time, we would like everyone to remember Nicky at his happiest riding a motorcycle. He dreamed as a kid of being a pro rider and not only achieved that but also managed to reach the pinnacle of his chosen sport in becoming World Champion. We are all so proud of that.Apart from these public memories, we will also have many great and happy memories of Nicky at home in Kentucky, in the heart of the family. We will all miss him terribly. It is also important for us to thank all the hospital staff for their incredible support they have been very kind. With the further support of the authorities in the coming days we hope to have Nicky home soon."

Tip 2 - May is Motorcycle Safety Month

TIP #2  Swerving or Turning Quickly

Sometimes you may not have enough room to stop, even if you use both brakes properly. An object may appear suddenly in your lane.  Or the car ahead might have to stop suddenly.  The only way to avoid a crash may be to turn sharply or swerve around it.  A swerve is any quick change in direction.  It can be two quick turns, or a rapid shift to one side or another.  Apply a small amount of hand pressure to the handgrip located on the side of your intended direction of escape. This will cause your motorcycle to lean quickly.  The sharper the turn, the more the motorcycle must lean.

Keep your body upright and allow the motorcycle to lean in the direction of the turn while keeping your knees against the tank and your feet firmly on the pegs.  Allow the motorcycle to move underneath you.  Make your escape route the target of your vision.  Press on the opposite handgrip once you've passed the obstacle to return to your original direction of travel.  To swerve to the left, press the left handgrip, then press the right to recover.  To swerve to the right, press right, then left. If you have to brake, do it separately from swerving.  Brake before or after swerving “ never while you're swerving.

Spine Injuries Lower, Not Higher with use of Motorcycle Helmet

5 Year Study - Dr. Nathaniel Brooks, MD

We came across an interesting Level 1 Trauma Center study that involved 1064 patients being cared for motorcycle spinal injuries from 2010 to 2015. Senior author, Nathaniel Brooks, MD an associated professor of neurosurgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health co-authored this study with 2 others.

The 5 year study showed that wearing a helmet significantly lowered the likelihood of cervical spinal injury.  Ironically this study was done in Wisconsin, a state that does not require the use motorcycle helmets by law.  We have attached a You Tube video From New 3 in Madison and the original article from Medscape Contributor Nancy Melville.   The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHTSA) yearly conducts research on helmet use; HERE is their latest from 2015. The debate continues.

Spine Injuries Lower, Not Higher, With Motorcycle Helmet

Nancy A. Melville | May 04, 2017

LOS ANGELES ” Contrary to lingering speculation by some of a link between motorcycle helmet use and cervical spine injury, a 5-year review of motorcycle crashes at a level 1 trauma center shows reduced” not increased” cervical spine injuries associated with helmet use.

"While our study does not explain mechanisms, the results show a significant association between wearing a helmet and a reduction in the risk of cervical spine injury," senior author, Nathaniel Brooks, MD, an associate professor of neurosurgery, Department of Neurosurgery, at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, told Medscape Medical News.

Despite substantial evidence of helmets protecting against head injuries and deaths in motorcycle crashes, resistance against helmet laws persists, with arguments including limitations of inherent freedom, restriction of vision and hearing, and the theoretical claim of an increased risk for spine injuries due to biomechanics related to the helmet.

Copyright Biker InCite | Wisconsin Highways | Helmet use

To better evaluate the role of helmets in cervical spine injury in motorcycle crashes, Dr Brooks and colleagues conducted a retrospective review of all patients treated at the University of Wisconsin Hospital's level 1 trauma center following motorcycle accidents from January 2010 to January 2015.

The results were presented here at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) 2017 Annual Meeting.

Of 1064 patients identified, 735 (69.1%) were not wearing helmets and 329 (30.9%) were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Patients who were not wearing helmets had significantly higher rates of cervical spine fractures (10.8%) compared with helmeted riders (4.3%; odds ratio [OR], 2.28; P < .001).

Other outcomes that were also worse for un-helmeted patients included the injury severity score, which was lower for helmeted riders (9.63 ± 8.52) than for un-helmeted riders (13.8 11.5; P < .0001), and un-helmeted riders had longer hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) lengths of stay (both P < .001).

Copyright Biker InCite 2013 | Harley-Davidson 110th Parade in Milwaukee

The incidence of fractures of the C1 and C5 vertebrae were significantly lower among those wearing helmets (P = .04 and P = .01, respectively), as were injuries that were ligamentous (P = .04), and there were no statistical differences in the incidence of thoracic or lumbar fractures between the two groups.

"Our findings showed helmet use to be associated with decreased mortality, shorter ICU length of stay and shorter hospital length of stay," first author, Paul Page, MD, a neurosurgery resident at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, said in presenting the findings at the meeting.

Among previous studies proposing cervical spine risk linked to helmet use was research  published in 1986, describing a head-neck injury "trade-off" associated with use of motorcycle helmets, and suggesting that while "helmets reduce the severity of head injuries, past a critical impact speed, helmets increase the severity of neck injuries."

Numerous studies since then have looked at the issue and shown no similar link with cervical spine injury. They include one multicenter study looking at different types of helmets ” full coverage and partial coverage ” which concluded that both types significantly reduced the risk for cervical spine injury compared with not wearing a helmet.

The authors of that study, which evaluated 5225 patients sustaining head injuries in motorcycle crashes in Taiwan between 2000 and 2009, concluded that the helmet design may have played a protective role.
"Wearing full-coverage and partial-coverage helmets significantly reduced the risk of cervical spine injury among head injury patients following motorcycle crashes," they concluded. "This effect may be due to the smooth surface and hard padding materials of helmet."
Dr Brooks noted that a host of additional factors in addition to not wearing a helmet, such as speed or blood alcohol levels, could represent important variables in the risk for cervical spine injury in a motorcycle crash, but in terms of sheer numbers, the study shows reduced rates with helmet use.
"We can't say why, and the study does not show causation [of not wearing a helmet with cervical spine injury], but just in looking at the numbers from a level 1 trauma center, we see that patients wearing helmets have lower rates of these types of injuries than un-helmeted riders."
The authors have disclosed no relevant financial relationships.

Global Super-sport Motorcycle Market Driven by the Increasing Number of Racing Events

Copyright Biker InCite® 2017 | PRESS RELEASE BEGIN:

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The global super-sport motorcycle market is projected to grow to 0.9 million units by 2021, at a CAGR of nearly 11% over the forecast period, according to Technavio's latest report.

Global super-sport motorcycle market is projected to reach 0.9 million units by 2021, posting a CAGR of nearly 11%.

In this report, Technavio covers the market outlook and growth prospects of the global super-sport motorcycle market for 2017-2021. This market research report also includes up to date analysis and forecasts for various market segments and all geographical regions.

Super-sport motorcycles are racing motorcycles that are intended to be street legal by their manufacturers. These motorcycles are typically light and nimble and usually have full body plastic faring. The increasing number of racing events across various geographies are steadily improving the adoption rates of super-sport motorcycles.

Technavio's research study segments the global super-sport motorcycle market into the following regions:

  • Europe
  • Americas
  • APAC

Super-sport motorcycle market in Europe

Europe dominated the super-sport motorcycle market in 2016, holding over 55% of the overall shares. Its total shares are expected to increase through the forecast period, driven by rising adoption to support the strong racing culture in the region, says Siddharth Jaiswal, a lead analyst at Technavio for automotive manufacturing research.

In 2016, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the UK were the leading revenue contributors to the super-sport motorcycle market in Europe. Premium sports motorcycle manufacturers such as BMW Motorrad, Ducati, MV Agusta, and Triumph are centered in the region, which also boosts the market growth.

Super-sport motorcycle market in the Americas

The number of super-sport motorcycles in the Americas is expected to be over 220,000 by 2021. The US and Canada dominate the revenue generation for the market in the region, with baby boomers comprising the leading consumers for super-sport motorcycles. The increasing need for stability and comfort in these motorcycles are resulting in the launch of new vehicles to the market, creating new revenue streams. The presence of top vendors, such as Honda and Kawasaki, and a strong racing culture drives the adoption of motorcycles in the US.

Super-sport motorcycle market in APAC

APAC is projected to showcase a CAGR of nearly 15% through the forecast period, establishing itself as the fastest-growing segment of the market. The emergence of favorable environmental factors, rising disposable incomes, and consumer pull will drive the growth of the market segment, says Siddharth.

China and India dominate the super-sport motorcycle market in APAC. Japan, Australia, and New Zealand have been showing impressive adoption of these vehicles in the past few years, which has been attracting various players to these markets. Prominent racing series, such as All Japan Road Race Championship, are also significantly impacting the regional segment.

The top vendors in the global super-sport motorcycle market highlighted in the report are:

  • Yamaha Motor Company
  • Kawasaki
  • Honda
  • Ducati

In our continued tests, the system quickly cooled the surface 10-15 degrees below ambient temperature. On the heat side we thermostatically set it to top out at approximately 110 degrees.

Between our shared American roots, values and traditions, collaborating with Harley-Davidson is an exciting and natural fit, said Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum Senior Brand Manager Josh Hayes. Harley-Davidson shares Sailor Jerry's genuine Americana values for freedom and living outside the lines. With Harley-Davidson, we look forward to a long partnership that celebrates our shared brand beliefs.

The collaboration of these two Americana-steeped brands is a true testament to their rich histories of honoring the traditional values, passions and purposes of the men for whom they are named. After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Norman Collins dedicated his life honing the art of tattooing out of his shop on Hotel Street in Honolulu. Collins shop became the must-stop destination for sailors on their shore-leave. His unique flash-art style started a movement that still inspires artists today. Harley-Davidson, named after founders William S. Harley, Arthur Davidson, William A. Davidson and Walter Davidson, has become an American icon since its founding in 1903. Since its first motorcycle, Harley-Davidson has been dedicated to fulfilling dreams of personal freedom “ from exceptional custom experiences, innovative products and precise manufacturing. Together, these two brands are excited to begin a partnership that combines their joint passions and values.

Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and Harley-Davidson are all about freedom of expression and customization, whether that is expressed by a Norman Collins tattoo or a bike, said Scott Beck, Harley-Davidson Director of Marketing.  We are struck by the natural ties Sailor Jerry has to the motorcycle culture.

  • Harley-Davidson Iron 883: Bare-knuckle minimalism and garage-built style featuring bullet design detailing, straight cut mufflers, a low drag-style handlebar, front fork gaiters, chopped rear fender and a solo tuck and roll seat. All new adjustable rear shocks and front cartridge forks provide stability and comfort. The Iron 883 is a nimble urban machine that kicks asphalt.
  • Harley-Davidson Roadster: With a profile reminiscent of racing Sportster motorcycles from the 1950s and 1960s, Roadster joins Harley's Dark Custom lineup with a minimalist design inspired by classic models and current trends in stripped-down custom bikes.
